Billing Information
No patient is ever billed by Heartlinks for the services provided under hospice care, palliative care, or grief support.
Hospice Care Billing
Patients with a terminal illness or their family members do not have to pay for hospice care at Heartlinks. Costs for hospice care are generally covered by Medicare (through the Medicare Hospice Benefit), Medicaid, private health insurance, Veterans Health Administration, and the Heartlinks Compassion Care Fund.
Health Insurance
Many private insurance companies provide some coverage for hospice care. Check with your insurer to determine whether hospice care is covered and under what circumstances. Coverage can vary among private insurers, with differences in qualifications and covered benefits.
Veterans Benefits
The Veterans Health Administration covers hospice care, providing benefits very similar to the Medicare Hospice Benefit. Veterans eligible for VA benefits can receive comprehensive hospice care with Heartlinks through the VA system.
Medicare & Medicaid
Most hospice patients have their costs covered by Medicare, through the Medicare Hospice Benefit. This benefit covers team services at 100% and pays for medications, medical supplies, and durable medical equipment related to the hospice diagnosis with little or no out-of-pocket expense to the patient.
Medicaid also pays for hospice care for individuals who meet eligibility requirements. Medicaid benefits are very similar to the Medicare Hospice Benefits and are available to eligible patients and families regardless of their payer source.
Palliative Care Billing
Palliative care is specialized medical care focused on providing relief from the symptoms and stress of a serious illness. The goal is to improve the quality of life for both the patient and their family.
Health Insurance
Many private insurance companies cover palliative care services. Coverage details can vary, so it is important to check with your insurer to understand what services are covered and under what conditions.
Medicare & Medicaid
Medicare Part B and Medicaid may cover certain palliative care services, such as doctor visits, nursing care, and some treatments aimed at symptom management. Coverage can include consultations with palliative care specialists and coordination of care among different providers.
Individuals Without Insurance
If you do not have insurance coverage and cannot afford palliative care services, you may be eligible for financial assistance that will cover your care costs through the Heartlinks Compassion Care Fund. This support is provided through donations, gifts, grants, and other community sources. Please call us at (509) 837-1676 to learn more.
